Is Buffalo Sauce Vegan?
The name seems any link to buffalo, the animal Bison? Many people ask this question if this hot sauce is vegan or not? Well, the name has no link to the animal buffalo. Rather the name represents the place of origin, a restaurant located in Buffalo, Newyork.
Traditionally buffalo sauce is made with butter and hence not completely vegan. So if you are buying your sauce from the store, check out the ingredients list.
However, if you are making your own buffalo sauce at home, it's both affordable and easy to customize. You probably have most of the ingredients on hand, and it's a great way to use up any leftovers.
You can also skip the oil or any fat and customize your buffalo sauce for WFPB plant-based diet. This delicious sauce is gluten-free as well.
Why you'll love this vegan buffalo sauce?
- it's easy to make
- quick condiment, takes 3 - 4 minutes or less
- customizable as per need
- uses few pantry ingredients
- plant-based, gluten-free
- pairs up well with a lot of appetizers and other food as well
Ingredients you'll need -
Olive oil - substitute - vegan butter or avocado oil. To make WFPB-friendly, skip the oil completely
Hot Sauce - choose any cayenne based hot sauce. Traditionally Frank's hot sauce is used in buffalo sauce. I also love to make this buffalo sauce with sriracha hot sauce. Choose your hot sauce depending on the heat you want in your sauce.
Maple Syrup - this is optional if you want to balance the heat with mild sweetness. Substitute with ketchup. Ketchup will add a intence balanced flavor to the buffalo sauce.
Vinegar - Buffalo sauce is a vinegar-based hot sauce. I add in small quantity since many of the hot sauce already has vinegar in it.
Vegan Worcestershire sauce/ Tamari - however this is completely optional and can substitute with tamari or soy sauce giving it a umami flavor. I don't add both of them many a times and still it makes a perfect spicy condiment.
Spices - Smoked paprika, garlic powder, cayenne pepper (optional).
How to make vegan buffalo sauce at home?
It's the easiest of all I would say. Add all the ingredients in a bowl and whisk for 2 - 3 minutes till they are mixed well.
Or pour in a sauce pan and bring it to a boil. Cool down completely to room temperature. Serve or store for future.
How to store?
You can easily refrigerate the buffalo sauce for months when stored properly in an air tight glass jar (mason jar).
So make your yummy spicy condiment at home, store tight, and enjoy with any appetizers.
